tungiasis is caused by what
A
by a flea calledTunga penetrans.

how does tungiasis come about (2)
A
- An impregnated female flea burrows into skin and lodges in the epidermis and engorges.
- Creates a lesion that resembles an abscess with a central punctum.

what complications can occur (3)
A
- ulceration
- infection (including tetanus)
- lymphangitis.

what area is commonly affected in tungiasis
A
the feet due to limited jumping ability

what other sites are affected in tungiasis (6)

- soles
- toes
- toe webs
- thighs
- perineum
- genitalia.

what is a clinical feature of tungiasis
A
Pain or itch as the flea burrows.

how can you treat tungiasis (4)
A
- spontaneous recovery may occur
- Manual removal of flea with sterile needle
- If numerous, topical ivermectin, vaseline, paraffin may facilitate killing of the flea, but the actual fleas will eventually need manual removal .
- Consider tetanus prophylaxis

how can you prevent tungiasis (2)
A
- wear shoes
- avoid sitting and or walking bare in beaches in endemic areas.
