Tumor Markers
Should not be used for primary diagnosis of cancer but instead used with a definitive diagnosis via biopsy. They may also be used to monitor tumor recurrence and response to therapy.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
Metastasis to bone and liver
Alpha-fetoprotein
Normally made by a fetus. Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Hepatoblastoma, yolk sac tumor, testicular cancer, mixed germ cell tumor
B-hCG
Choriocarcinoma, Testicular Cancer
CA 19-9
Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma
CA-125
Ovarian Cancer
Calcitonin
Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma
CEA (CarcinoEmbryogeninc Antigen)
Very nonspecific but produced by ~70% of colorectal and pancreatic cancers; also produced by gastric, breast, and medullary thyroid carcinomas
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen)
Used to follow prostate adenocarcinoma.
**Could be elevated in BPH and prostatitis
