TULIP Flashcards
What is the T in TULIP?
Total Depravity. As a result of the fall, all humans are totally unable to do anything good, or act in any way that is pleasing to God. We are unable even to approach God in faith, because “our thinking became futile and our foolish hearts darkened (Rom. 1:21).” We are utterly helpless to please God or draw near to him.
Mark 7:21-23
For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.
What is the U in TULIP?
Unconditional Election. God has elected some to eternal life in himself, and left others to their depravity. This gift of eternal life is by God’s grace, not through any good work merited by the believer.
Rom 9:11 - though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad —in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls
Eph 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—
What is the L in TULIP?
Limited (Particular) Atonement. Christ’s blood atoned for the elect, not those who are hardened in their unbelief and never come to faith in him. In this sense the atonement of his blood is ‘limited’. (“Particular Atonement is a preferable way to explain this point.)
John 10:11
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
What is the I in TULIP?
Irresistible Grace. God’s grace cannot be resisted. He draws those whom he elects irresistibly
John 6:44 - No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.
What is the P in TULIP?
Perseverance of the Saints. Because God’s election is sure, all the elect in the end will have true saving faith.
John 6:47 - Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
Philippians 1:6 - “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
