How did Henry vII changed religion? ( 1509-1547 )
Established Church of England after he fell out with Pope when he refused to give him a divorce.
Closed down monasteries and used their wealth for his own purposes.
Allowed the Bible to be read in English, not Latin.
How did Edward VI change religion? ( 1549-1543 )
Edward was a protestant.
Made the churches very bare he thought God should be worshipped in a plain and simple way.
No stained glass windows, statues or expensive robes for the priests to wear.
How did Mary I change religion?
1553-1558
A committed catholic named “ Bloody Mary”as she executed many Protestants.
Under her reign the pope controlled England again.
The churches were redecorated and church services and prayer books were in Latin again, not English.
How did Elizabeth I change religion? ( 1558-1587 )
She was a Protestant and wanted to return the country to this faith.
Wanted to be respectful of both catholics and Protestants
She came up with religious settlement to create peace.
Called herself “governed” of the church not the head.
People still thought of the pope as head of church.
Services were in English again but strict catholics who didn’t want to attend the new type of services were not punished too harshly- fined.
