Tuberculosis Flashcards
What is the classic microscopy finding in TB?
Acid fast bacilli on Ziehl-Neelson staining
What is the classic histology finding in TB?
Granulomata with central caseous (cheesy) necrosis
What is typically seen on CXR?
fibronodular opacities in upper lobes +/- cavitation
What test can be done for rapid diagnosis of TB?
nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT)
What is the treatment for TB?
2 months RIPE 4 months RI Rifampicin Isoniazid Pyrazinamide Ethambutol
What are the side effects of Rifampicin?
Red/orange secretions/urine
What are the side effects of isoniazid?
Peripheral neuropathy (glove and stocking distribution)
What are the side effects of Pyrazinamide?
Increased uric acid (gout)
Arthralgia
What are the side effects of Ethambutol?
Visual problems (optic neuritis, colour vision first sign)
What is the name for an apical TB lesion in the lung?
Assmann focus
What is miliary TB?
Spread of TB in the bloodstream
- miliary dissemination into lung by pulmonary artery
- -> pulmonary vein –> systemic dissemination
What is a Ghon focus?
Area of infection and cased necrosis at periphery of the lung, beneath the pleura
What is the radiological sign of endobronchial TB?
Tree-in-bud sign (also seen in other pathologies)
