A
- Ziehl-Neilsen stain used for acid fast bacilli
- pink
2
Q
transmission & entry
A
via respiratory tract, aerosols/droplets
3
Q
pathenogenesis - how does it survive within macrophages
A
- maintains phagosome pH at 6.2-6.3 for replication
- inhibits lysosome fusion within macrophage
4
Q
pathenogenesis
A
- survives inside macrophages
- produces granuloma (survival niche)
- can establish an asymptomatic latent infection
5
Q
tuberculin skin test (TST)
A
- inject purified protein derivative (PPD) & tuberculin
- induces local inflammatory response and recruits CD4+ cells
6
Q
IGRA (interferon production in response to in vitro stimulation with specific M. tuberculosis antigens)
A
- collect patient’s blood to add to culture medium
- add PPD
- test for interferon secreted into media
7
Q
if positive for TST or IGRA…
A
- chest x-ray
- microscopy of sputnum
