what is a FFDO?
- federal flight deck officer
check in procedure on board aircraft:
- present NOTICE OF LEO FLYING ARMED FORM to flight crew
- may be asked to meet PIC and show creds
responsibilities of PIC:
- has the duty to protect passengers, crew, and aircraft
- has authority to make decisions re: landing and safe operations of aircraft
- can refuse to allow armed LEO’s to fly
responsibilities of FAMS:
- direct all LEO activity on plane
- safety of passenger and crew
- leads all LEO’s onboard
- mission to detect, deter, and defeat hostile acts against civil aviation and nations transportation system
responsibilities of FFDO:
- pilots who take advanced training to carry firearm
- authorization limited to flight deck only
responsibilities of crew members:
- fall under authority of PIC
- trained to handle most emergencies to include disruptive passengers, medical emergencies, and other in flight situations
- may request LEO assistance
LEO considerations for taking action during air piracy:
- use sound judgement
- know seat location of other LEO’s
- consider LEO factors such as RS, PC, and totality of circumstances
procedures for escorting prisoners:
- notify airlines 24 hours in advance
- notify airlines of level of risk of passenger(s) (high or low)
escorting high risk:
- 2 armed LEO’s per 1 high risk passenger
- if you get waiver to carry two high risk passengers, you need 3 armed officers
escorting low risk:
- 1 armed LEO per 1 low risk passenger (4 hour flight)
- 2 armed LEO’s per 1 low risk passenger for flights over 4 hours.
- 2 low risk passengers max
LEO responsibilities when transporting:
- arrive at check in at least 1 hour before flight
- accompany prisoner at all times
- board first, deplane last
- sit in very back of plane
what weapons can you carry on plane:
- gun
- taser
