Extension thoracic spine muscles
Erector spinae and multifidus
Extension thoracic spine grade 3, 4, 5 postion
pt in prone with chest off the table. PT needs to stabilize at the feet or hips if pt has a weak glute.
5- clear to chest and stick the landing for a 5
4- clear to chest but not stick the landing
3- arms at side and able to extend up for a 3
extension thoracic spine grade 2,1,0 position
prone; any clear visible movement is a 2

position of pt: prone with while truck off the table (between the belly button and the ASIS) patient has to lift up to the horizontal

Postural dysfunctions where you would want to focus on extension
increased thoracic kyphosis and women over the age of 50
Trunk Flexion Muscles
Rectus Abdominus, Obliques externus, Obliques internus
Trunk Flexion grade 3,4,5
pt: supine weak hip flexors stabilize at the hip
5- raise upper body until shoulder blades are cleared and arms behind the head
4- Raise upper body until the shoulder blades are cleared arms at chest
3- arms outstretched
Trunk flexion grade 2 sequences
sequence 1: patient able to lift head and shoulders up
sequence 2: support the head and ask patient to lean forward. See if ribs depress
sequence 3: support the head and ask patient to cough
Trunk Rotation Muscles
Obliques externis and internas
Trunk rotation 3,4,5 postion
pt in supine
5- hands behind the head, lift and twist clearing both of the shoulders
4- hands crosses over the chest
3- hands at side
might try and substitute by activating the pec major shoulder will shrug as raise from the table
Trunk rotation 0,1,2 Positon
2 - partial range
1- palpate the transverse abdominals
