Trunk and Abdomen Flashcards
Injuries in this region can produce
life threatening situations
continually monitor
breathing, circulation, blood pressure, and any indication of internal bleeding or shock
thorax injury observation:
leaning toward side that is injured or splinting area with hand
abdominal injury observation:
lie on side with knees pulled to chest
male external genetial injury observation:
lie on side holding genetials
palpate along _____ in thorax region
ribs and intercostal spaces for tenderness ,rigidity and deformity
apply anterior to posterior ______
pressure along rib cage to assess for fracture
transverse pressure to assess
costochondral junction
semi-reclining position is useful if athlete is
having hard time breathing
rib contusion MOI:
blow to ribcage can bruise ribs or musculature
signs and symptoms of rib contusion:
painful breathing
point tenderness and pain with rib compression
management of rib contusion:
-POLICE
-rest and decrease activity
-protective equipment (if allowed)
Rib fracture MOI:
result of direct blow
Flail chest
(not common in sport)
-where 3 or more consecutive ribs are fractured at two points
signs and symptoms of rib fractures:
pain with inspiration, point tenderness and possible deformity with palpation
-crackling or crepitus with breathing
management of rib fracture: 3 things
-remove from play
-refer to physican for xray
-support and rest use rib brace
Commotio Cordis MOI:
cardiac arrest due to traumatic blunt impact to chest
signs and symptoms of commotio cordis:
sudden collapse and loss of consciousness
ventricular fibrillation
management of commotio cordis:
early defibrillation with AED and resuscitation is critical.
Kidney contusion MOI
external force (direct blow)
signs and symptoms of kidney contusion:
shock, nasea, vomitting, rigidity of back muscles, hematuria (blood in pee)
pain raditating around trunk
management of kidney contusion
-removal from activity
-24 hour observation gradually increase fluid intake
-bed rest and close observation after activity resumes
injury of spleen MOI
result of direct blow
risk of injury to spleen is increased in the presence of
mononucleosis (enlarged spleen)
signs and symptoms of injury to spleen:
shock,abdonimal rigiduty,nausea, vomiting
Kehrs sign
injury to spleen can be
life threatening due to spleens ability to splint itself
management of injury to spleen:
conservative treatment involves close monitoring by physian
