What happened in Korea post WWII?
After WWII, Korea was divided North and South at the 38th Parallel. The North was Communist, while the South was anti-Communist.
Who did Truman think was behind the attack of South Korea?
Truman thinks that the Soviets are behind the attack of South Korea because they want to reunite Korea and make it a fully Communist nation.
What does China do as UN forces march North?
On November 25, several hundred thousand Chinese forces counter attack with planes, tanks and waves of people.
What is the Marshall Plan?
- Aids Europe’s economics.
- U.S. gave $13 billion in loans to Western Europe Nations.
- Provide food, for famine, and heat, to heat houses and run factories.
- Gave money to jump start economic growth.
- Aid was offered to Soviet Union, but Stalin said, “No!”
What is the GI Bill of Rights?
- Granted veterans a variety of benefits.
- Paid for 1 year unemployment if veteran was unable to find a job.
- Veteran could go to college and receive financial aid.
- Government would loan them money to build houses or start businesses.
- College $500/year + $50/month for living expenses.
- Married = $75/month.
- Eventually, 8 million veterans took part in this.
What is NATO?
- Provided military alliance to counter Soviet expansion.
- Made up of 12 Nations from Western Europe and North America. “An attack on one… An attack on all.”
- Soviets create Warsaw Pact, which is the Soviet version of NATO.
- Made up of Communist nations from Eastern Europe.
What is the Fair Deal?
An economic extension of the New Deal proposed by Harry Truman that called for higher minimum wage, housing and full employment. It led only to the Housing Act of 1949 and the Social Security Act of 1950 due to opposition in congress.
Why does China and Korea want an end the Korean War?
China and North Korea wanted the Korean War ti end because of the significant loss of life that they were experiencing. China & North Korea combined lost 1.5 million soldier/civilians during the Korean War.
What is the Truman Doctrine?
- Opposed to Communist expansion.
- Truman wanted to help the people resisting from the outside.
- Congress gave Greece & Turkey $400 million.
- Truman promised aid to countries with were struggling against communism.
Why did Truman fire MacArthur?
MacArthur told Truman that the war would be over by Christmas, and when that didn’t happen, he blamed Truman. Then, MacArthur wanted to attack China, but Truman was opposed to the idea. They were at constant battle, and Truman decided to fire him.
