Q

Most important changes that makes overhaul necessary

A
  1. CRITICAL DIMENSIONS IN THE ENGINE ARE CHANGED AS A RESULT OF WEAR AND STRESS.
  2. FOREIGN MATERIALS ACCUMULATE IN THE ENGINE.
  3. METAL IN CRITICAL PARTS IN THE ENGINE BECOMES CRYSTALLIZES. MAKING IT MORE BRITTLE.
  4. ONE OR MORE PARTS MAY ACTUALLY FAIL.

A

EXTENSIVE RECORDS

22
Q

It must be reviewed to ensure that the engine conforms to its type certification.

A

FAA TYPE CERTIFICATE DATA SHEET

23
Q

It is needed to determine the current condition of the engine and its components.

A

VISUAL INSPECTION

24
Q

According to FAR 43 Appendix D, each person performing an annual or 100hr inspection must inspect the engine as follows:

A

ENGINE SECTION

STUDS AND NUTS

INTERNAL ENGINE

ENGINE MOUNT

FLEXIBLE VIBRATION DAMPERS

ENGINE CONTROLS

LINES, HOSES, AND CLAMPS

EXHAUST STACKS

ACCESSORIES

ALL SYSTEMS

COWLING

25
Q

Several terms are used to describe defects detected in engine parts during inspection.

A

ABRASION

BRINELLING

BURNING

BURNISHING

BURR

CHIPPING

CORROSION

CRACK

DENT

EROSION

PITTING

26
Q

An area of roughened scratches or marks.

A

ABRASION

27
Q

One or more indentations on bearing races, usually caused by high static loads.

A

BRINELLING

28
Q

Surface damage due to excessive heat.

A

BURNING

29
Q

Polishing of one surface by sliding contact with a smooth, harder surface.

A

BURNISHING

30
Q

A sharp or roughened projection of metal.

A

BURR

31
Q

Breaking away of pieces of material, that is usually caused by excessive stress concentration or careless handling.

A

CHIPPING

32
Q

Loss of metal by a chemical or electrochemical action.

A

CORROSION

33
Q

A partial separation of material.

A

CRACK

34
Q

A small, rounded depression in a surface usually caused by the part being struck with a rounded object.

A

DENT

35
Q

Loss of metal from the surface by mechanical action of foreign objects, such as grit or fine sand.

A

EROSION

36
Q

Small hollows of irregular shape in the surface, usually caused by corrosion or minute mechanical chipping of surfaces.

A

PITTING

37
Q

They should be closely examined for smoothness and freedom of movement.

A

BALL BEARINGS AND ROLLER BEARINGS

38
Q

It is usually the heaviest and most highly stressed part of an aircraft engine.

A

CRANKSHAFT

39
Q

It must be checked for small cracks, corrosion, pitting, nicks, or other damage.

A

CONNECTING RODS

40
Q

It needs to be checked for scoring, cracks, rocker shaft to shaft boss clearance and out-of-round conditions.

A

ROCKER SHAFT BOSSES

41
Q

Best methods to double check your visual inspection findings

A

MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION

DYE-PENETRANT INSPECTION

EDDY CURRENT

ULTRASOUND

X-RAY

42
Q

It is a nondestructive test for defects open to the surface in parts made of any nonporous material.

A

DYE-PENETRANT INSPECTION

43
Q

Those are composed of free electrons under the influence of an induced electromagnetic field, that are made to drift through metal.

A

EDDY CURRENT INSPECTION

44
Q

It makes possible to locate defects in all types of materials.

A

ULTRASONIC DETECTION EQUIPMENT

45
Q

3 Basic Ultrasonic Inspection Methods

A

1.PULSE-ECHO

2.THROUGH TRANSMISSION

3.RESONANCE

46
Q

It is a method of detecting invisible cracks and other defects in ferromagnetic materials, such as iron and steel.

A

MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION

47
Q

It can penetrate material and disclose discontinuities through the metal or non-metal components, making it an excellent inspection process when needed to determine the structural integrity of an engine component.

A

X-RAYS

48
Q

It is a tool used to control and apply a specific torque to a fastener such as a bolt or a nut.

A

TORQUE WRENCH

49
Q

Parts of Torque Wrench

A
  1. ADJUSTABLE LOCK HANDLE
  2. THIMBLE HANDLE WITH THIMBLE SCALE
  3. ANTI- SLIP HANDLE FOR GRIP
  4. HEAD SOCKET OR HEAD WRENCH
  5. MAIN SCALE
  6. BODY
  7. LOCK PIN
  8. SELECTOR KNOB
  9. SOCKET DRIVE CONNECTOR
50
Q

Steps in Using The Torque Wrench

A

1ST - UNLOCK THE ADJUSTABLE LOCK HANDLE.

2ND - SET THE TORQUE VALUE BY TURNING THE THIMBLE SCALE HANDLE.

3RD - IF THE DESIRED TORQUE VALUE IS SET, MAKE SURE TO LOCK THE ADJUSTABLE LOCK HANDLE.

4TH - PUT THE PROPER SIZE OF SOCKET AND PROCEED TO TORQUING.

5TH - RETURN THE THIMBLE SCALE READING TO “0”.
