Trouble Shooting Video and Display Flashcards
what does it mean if you see no signal from a display monitor?
A cable has possibly come loose or been damaged. Check the connectivity and attempt to reseat the cable.
what should you do if you see the display monitor is dim?
check the brightness controls. If the monitor has simply failed you can swap out the old monitor for a new one. Swapping out the monitor is also a good way to see if the issue is beyond the monitors configuration.
what does it mean if you see some information on the screen but with flickering and image quality issues.
check the cable itself for connectivity issues. check the individual pins of the video connection itself as damaged pins could cause this.
what does it mean if the screen is distorted image or geometry?
check the configuration settings in the OS. Check the OS refresh rate and resolution rate. A cable may also need to be replaced.
what is hardware acceleration?
a process where applications offload certain tasks to hardware in your system especially to accelerate that task. Turning this off may help correct display image issues you are experiencing.
what is native resolution?
when an LCD screen has a fixed display. The number of pixels dont change and there is no way to modify the resolution.
when does a display look best?
when the video settings match a displays native resolution. a mismatch can cause distortion.
what is burn in?
when you have a single image on the screen that stays for a very long time. It essentially leaves a ghost image on the screen.
what is pixel shift?
a technology built into modern displays to help prevent burn in. It will slightly move an image that has not changed after a certain amount of time, by just a pixel or two.
what is burn in called on LCD screens?
image sticking.
how can you clean a screen with image sticking?
display a white screen for an extended period of time, this will “clean” the screen.
what are dead pixels?
some LCDs have one or more pixels on the display that are black. This is a manufacturing issue.
how can you fix dead pixels?
there is no way, the display must be replaced.
what should you do if the screen is flashing?
check the cables as this is usually caused by a loose or faulty cable. If its caused by the monitor you will have to resolve this by replacing the entire monitor. also check the configuration of the monitor and make sure it matches the settings of the video. a mismatch can cause flickering.
what should you do with incorrect colour display?
check the monitor settings, the tint and custom colour settings. Check the driver configuration inside the OS. Also check if the OS modifies the display colour depending on the time of day. If none of this works, attempt a factory reset.
