Tropical Storms Flashcards
What does the temperature of the sea have to be for a tropical storm to occur?
27 C
What does the warm ocean cause
Large amounts of precipitation
What happens when warm air rises and cools
Huge amounts of energy are released which makes a powerful storm
The warm rising air creates an area of:
Low pressure
Why does the storm spin?
The Earths rotation deflects the paths of the winds
How are extreme winds caused?
The area of very low pressure in the centre of the storm creates a very big pressure difference to the surroundings
How fast are the wind speeds of a tropical storm?
250 Km/h +
How is high amounts of precipitation caused?
Large amounts of warm air being sucked into the low pressure centre due to the difference in pressure. The air rises cools and condenses forming rain
Where do most tropical storms occur?
Between 5 and 30 degrees north and south of the equator- this is where the water is warm enough
