Tropical Rainforrest Flashcards
What’s a tropical rainforest?
A tropical rainforest is a large scale ecosystem with hot and humid weather, lots of rain and lots of oxygen is produced by the large tall trees.
What’s the equator?
The equator is down the middle of the earth and is very hot.
What does infertile mean?
Infertile is soil that cannot be used again.
What does decomposers mean?
This is where dead leaves and other things are broken down and become the O-horizon.
What’s the nutrients cycle?
This is passed on through different species.
What’s a soil horizon?
This is a section of the ground with different features and conditions.
What’s an adaptation?
Adaptations are changes that animals as an example have made to their species for survival.
What’s evolution?
This is how people have changed and adapted over time.
What’s an emergent?
This is the top layer of the rainforest, birds live on this level. The most amount of light comes here and the height is 45m.
What’s the canopy?
The canopy is the second to top layer of the rainforest.
What’s the under canopy?
This is the middle layer of the rainforest, dark, cool, very little sunlight, and limited plants and animals.
What’s the shrub layer?
This is the second lowest layer of the rainforest, and 1/4’th the amount of light.
What’s the Forrest floor?
This is the lowest layer of the rainforest, insects and snakes live here etc.
What’s deforestation?
This is when people cut down trees for purposes.
What’s commercial farming?
Commercial farming is when tribes use slash and burn to farm but only for themselves.
What’s slash and burn?
Slash and burn is where tribes cut down trees and burn them to use the soil for commercial farming.
What’s logging?
Logging is where you cut down trees to make money.
What’s mineral extraction?
This is where using bauxite as an example is exported from the rainforest and used as a material.
What’s soil erosion?
Soil erosion is where soil crumbles away due to deforestation and wind.
What’s the carbon cycle?
A cycle where carbon is transported and exported.
What’s the water cycle?
This is where water flows from different areas.
What’s a resource?
This is a tool or a piece of equipment we need.
What’s a biodiversity?
A biodiversity is how diverse the ecosystem and species is.
