tropical rainforests Flashcards
what is a rainforest
A rainforest is a tall, dense jungle or forest, which has a high annual rainfall, often up to 1, 750 - 2000 mm and a high annual temperature of around 27 degrees
where are the worlds rainforests located on in the map
the linear pattern of rainfrst around the world, are mostly along the equator. some of the countries are slightly below and some are above
what is the climate of a rainforest like
the climate is very hot and humid, where it virtually rains everyday. Temperatures vary through the year
what is deforestation
deforestation is the removal of trees,
what are the causes of deforestation
logging, farming , mining , road building, settlements, dam building
what are the impacts of deforestation
less plants and animal species, loss of habitats, soil erosion, flooding
why are rainforests useful
they help stabilise the climate, they house incredible amounts of plants and wildlife and they produce nourishing rainfall around the planet
give an example of how an animal has adapted to living in the rain forest
a sloth has adapted by using a camouflage coat and moves very slowly to make it difficult for animals to spot
What are the five layers of the rainforest vegetation
Forest floor, shrub layer, under canopy, the canopy , emergents
Forest floor
Very dark,
Shrug layer
Usually very dark and damp , layers of shrubs and young trees
Under canopy
Younger plants waiting to come up with 6 metres or more high
The canopy
Majority of the animals Live here is formed by the crowns of many tall trees at 35 - 40 m above the floor
Emergents
Canopy of the tallest trees , unlimited light and sun over 50 metres tall
what are drip tip leaves and how have they adapted
they help stabilise the tall trees and have adapted to cope with exceptionally high rainfall.
