Tropical Rainforests Flashcards
why is the soil not very fertile?
because the nutrients are quickly washed out of the soil because of heavy rainfall
how are lianas adapted?
they’re woody vines that climb up the trees to reach sunlight
how are tree trunks adapted?
they’re tall and thin to allow trees to reach the sunlight
what are drip tips?
pointy leaves which allows water to run off the leaves quickly; prevents mould from growing and stopping photosynthesis
what are buttress roots?
large roots have ridges which create a large surface area to support the trees
what are epiphytes?
plants that live on the branches of tall trees in the canopy and get nutrients don’t the air and water (not the soil)
how are sloths adapted?
use camouflage and move slowly to make it difficult for predators to spot them
how are spider monkey adapted?
they have long, strong limbs to climb trees
how is the flying frog adapted?
they have webbed hands and feet and a flap of loose skin that stretches between it’s limbs to allow it to glide from plant to plant
how is a toucan adapted?
has a long, large bill to allow it to reach and cut fruit from branches that are too weak to support its weight
