Tropical Monsoon Climates Flashcards
(2) Characteristics
Wet and dry season
Seasonal reversal in wind direction
Ocean vs land capacity
Ocean heat capacity>Land so temperature varies less,
Asia is a large continental landmass so has intense heating and cooling
3 stages of Dry season
In January the ITCZ moves south towards the tropic of Capricorn
The continental landmass experiences intense cooling leading to high pressure air
Wind blows from the NE away from the high pressure bringing dry
3 stages of Wet Season
In June the ITCZ moves poleward towards cancer
AS the land slightly further north is hotter the ITCZ is drawn by the low pressure
Trade winds from the south blow warm moist air from the Indian Ocean fueling low pressure zone to assist creation of big storms
Characteristics of Wet season
At least 30*
Up to 10,000mm falls
Agriculture dependent on it
Role of sub-tropical anti-cyclones
In January cooling creates high pressure and wind to blow from NE
Opposite in June
