Q

Economic Impacts Contrast

A

Total cost much greater in New York, but the relative cost was much higher in Cuba (enough to affect the whole countries GDP). This is because USA is a much larger and wealthier country.
Also more losses were insured in the USA, allowing for a quicker recovery.

The US government gave $60.s bln in aid to hurricane victims.
The government promised improved forecasting of storm surges (to give more effective warnings).

18
Q

Government Responses Contrast

A

Different political ideology (Cuba is Communist and therefore the state has a bigger role).
US government is much wealthier and could afford to give billions in aid; in Cuba people had to be more self reliant (although the government still gave very appropriate help through loans, etc.)
US is more technologically developed with a satellite network so is better placed to improve weather forecasting in the future.
