Trophic Levels Flashcards
Autotrophs
An autotroph is an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals. They produce their own food therefore are sometimes called producers.
Types of Autotrophs
Algae - Aquatic organisms, the largest of which are seaweeds
Phytoplankton - tiny microscopic organisms that lie in the ocean.
Bacteria.
Heterotrophs
A heterotroph, or consumer, is an organism that eats other plants or animals for energy and nutrients.
Decomposers
Fungi and bacteria - breakdown of dead organic matter.
Detritivores
Woodlice, millipedes and worms - consume detritus (decomposing organic matter).
Primary consumers
Herbivores, usually eats green plants.
Secondary consumers
Eat the herbivores.
Tertiary consumers
Eat the secondary consumers.
Apex predators
Eat other consumers
