Synecdoche
a figure of speech in which a part stands for the whole
- genus stands for species
- species substituted for genus
- part substituted for the whole
- matter for what is made from it
- an “oblique” manner of speaking
Metonymy
substitution of some attributive or suggestive word for what is actually meant
-similar to Synecdoche
Pun
generic name for those figures which make a play on words
Antanaclasis
repetition of a word in two different senses

use of words alike in sound but different in meaning

use of a word understood differently in relationship to two or more other words, which it modifies or governs

Auxesis
magnifying the importance or gravity of something by referring to it with a disproportionate name
Litote
deliberate use of understatement, not to deceive but to enhance the impressiveness of what is said
Meiosis

Erotema/Rehtorical Question
asking a question, not for the purpose of eliciting an answer but for the purpose of asserting or denying something obliquely

Irony
use of a word in such a way as to convey a meaning opposite to the literal meaning of the word
- conveys a “transferred meaning”
- related to topics of contraries or contradictions
Paralipsis
pass over some matter, yet manage subtly to reveal the matter anyway
Onomatopoeia
use of words whose sound echoes the sense
-associated with topic of similarity
Oxymoron
yoking of two terms that are ordinarily contradictory
Paradox
apparently contradictory statement that nevertheless contains a measure of truth
