What are the Psalms?
• Pieces of poetry from the Book of Pslams in the Old Testament. Often set to music and sung as a part of worship.
• An important part of the Divine Office
• Forms the basis of many hymns used in church as they are also used during mass
What is the Divine Office?
• A collection of psalms and readings that every priest, monk, and nun has to say or sing 4 times a day.
What is plainchant?
• Ancient form of music that is usually sung without instruments.
• Used in monasteries to sing the Divine Office in Latin.
• Used in church services.
What are traditional hymns?
• Religious songs that praise God
• Have been used for hundreds of years
• Usually sung in church by all e.g during the mass
What are contemporary worship songs?
• Religious songs that have been written recently to use in worship
• Often sound more upbeat than traditional hymns
• Usually includes modern instruments
What are mass settings?
• The parts of the Mass that are sung rather than spoken.
Why are the Psalms used in worship?
• Centred around yhe peaise of God
• Talks about the joy of praising God through song
• Covers a wide range of human experiences and emotions
• Recognises that everything comes from God and without him, people are nothing.
Why is plainchant used in worship?
• Catholic Church considers it to be ideal to use in the mass as it is specifically suited to liturgy
Why are traditional hymans used in mass?
• Helps people to feel involved in worship
• Has stood the test of time: their ability to help people in worship has been proven over years.
Why is contemporary music used in worship?
• Help people to feel involved in worship
• Some people think this type of muisc is disrespectful since the upbeat nature can distract people rather than helping them focus on God but others think its more appealing than traditional hymns.

• Simpler mass settings to help people feel involved in worship
• Help to make the mass appeal to all
What is the gloria?
• A type of hymn used to praise God’s glory and goodness
• Begins with the words “Glory to God in the highest heaven” Luke 2:14
When is the gloria used?
• Used near the beginning of mass
• Not used during the more sombre and serious seasons of Advent and Lent
What is the alleluia?
• Hebrew word for “praise God”
• A hymn of joy and triump that praises God
• Announces the presence of Christ
When is the Alleluia used?
• Used to introduce the reading of the Gospels at Mass to greet the presence of Christ
• Sung 3 times during the Easter vigil to announce the resurrection but is not used during Lent
What is the Sanctus?
• Latin word for “holy”
• A hymn to praise God’s holiness
• Based on Isaiah’s vision in the temple when the angels cried out “Holy, holy is the Lord of hosts” Isaiah 6:1-3
When is the Sanctus used?
• Used before the Eucharistic prayer in Mass
• Not used during Advent and Lent
What is the Mystery of faith?
• An acknowledgement that the whole saving event of Christ’s life, death and resurrection has been made present through the consecration
When is the mystery of faith used?
• Used after the Consecration, when the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ

• “The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.”
• This twaching shows that there is one Gis, and only one God.
Mark 1:10-11
• “As soon as Jesus came uo out of the water, he saw heaven opening and the Spirit coming down on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my own Dear Son. I am pleased with you.’”
• The trinity reveals itself, in this passage, in three different forms: the father- a voice from heaven, the spirit- as a dove, a popular symbol used to represent the Holy Spirit throughout the bible, the son- Jesus.
What is the Nicene Creed?
A statement of faith that presents what Catholic’s believe
How is God the Son shown in the Nicene Creed?
• “Only begotten Son of God”, he is eternal
• “Consubstantial with Father”, Jesus and God have the same nature. Took on human nature to save humans from being seperated from God by Sin

• “God created the heavens and the earth”, the father is the creator
• “while a wind from God”, wind can be translated as spirit or breath, showing the Holy Spirit was invokvee in creation
• “Then God said”, God created by his word- God the Son is also the word of God.
