Q

Chi-rho

A

Chi-X
Rho – P
A reminder of the death of Jesus – an affirmation that Jesus is the Messiah. Many Christians wear this an alternative to the cross.

22
Q

Reasons against depicting God through art

A

• God is infinite (forever) but art is finite (not forever)
• Goes against the 2nd commandment - Do not worship idols (statues/artwork)
• If you pray to a statue/image some might get the impression you are worshipping that object
• They can give the wrong idea about God

23
Q

Catholic reasons for depicting God through art

A

• Huge influence on beliefs for Catholics
• God took on finite (not forever) limitations when he became human – humans are finite too
• We don’t have evidence of what Jesus looked like – any representation or view of him is valuable
• God became human for ALL people – only realistic that we show him as any ethnicity
• Art work can help focus prayer and worship

24
Q

The Crucifix

A

Acts as a reminder of Jesus’ crucifixion and Gods act of love in freeing people from sin and death

25
Q

Christ the reedemer in Rio

A

Made in 1931. It is a catholic pilgrimage site but is visited by thousands of tourists every month. The outstretched arms represent Jesus on the cross and the openness of the father and son – the message of Jesus is for everyone.

26
Q

The Sacred Heart

A

This is a common statue of Jesus. It usually includes holes on Jesus hands, a heart visibly on show, an expression of peace and love, a crown of thorns. These all represent the love and peace Jesus has to offer as well as the pain and suffering he suffered on the cross for us.

27
Q

The Beatitudes - Matthew 5:1-12

A

This is commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus takes the old law given to Moses in the Old Testament and changes the focus. He takes the focus from action to attitude. Christians believe he took the Old law and made it perfect. These might seem harder to follow at first glance however, they teach that by following these laws the actions will be impossible- if the attitude has changed then the temptation for the action will not happen.

28
Q

The Parable of the Sheep and Goats - Matthew 25:31-46

A

In this parable, Jesus stresses the importance of helping those in need and who are poor. This is the essence of Christianity and Catholic teaching today.

29
Q

St Irenaeus’ teaching about Jesus

A

He teaches that the incarnation is not only a teaching about the importance of the Gods love but also about the human race. As Jesus is fully God and human, he is a meeting point between God and humanity. Jesus is the perfect human being – he is God’s glory in a human version and so he was accepting of God working in his life.

30
Q

St Irenaeus taught that:

A
  • God is invisible: he is beyond human sight and understanding.
  • But Christians can get to know what God is like through Jesus.
  • Because Jesus is the Son of God, he displays qualities of God
  • This means Christians can develop a better understanding of God’s nature through examining the life and actions of Jesus.
31
Q

Jesus as fully God and fully man

A

When the focus is too much on Jesus as man there is a risk of seeing Jesus as more human than God. When the focus is to much on Jesus as God, there is a risk of seeing Jesus as more God than human and was just God in disguise.

32
Q

Dei Verbum 4

A

“For He sent His Son… so that He might dwell among men and tell them of the innermost being of God.”

33
Q

Dei Verbum 4

A

“Jesus Christ, therefore the Word made flesh, was sent ‘as a man to men’”

34
Q

Summary of Pope Benedict XVI in his apostolic exhortation

A

The incarnation meant the Word of God deliberately limited himself so that humans could understand Gods love. Jesus always knew the will of God because he is God. He always carried out the will of God because he is also the perfect human. As a human being, Jesus was fully in tune with the will of God. It was through the human act of dying that Jesus gave himself into Gods hand.

35
Q

The meaning of grace:

A
  • The love that united the 3 persons of the Trinity (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
  • pours out from the Trinity and gives life to ALL things
  • pours into people’s hearts and calls them to a deeper relationship with God - Is a free and unconditional gift of love from God
  • Gives believers the strength to carry out the Word of God
  • Helps people to become aware of what God wants for them
36
Q

The sacramental nature of reality (life):

A

Catholics believe that the whole of the world and everything in it can be seen as a sacrament (sign of God’s love). God’s presence and love can therefore be seen throughout the world.

37
Q

The incarnation played a big role in helping Catholics view life as a sacrament:

A
  • Before the incarnation God was seen as distant
  • Jesus was the ultimate gift from God and showed his love for us
  • As Jesus lived on earth, we can see God as a living and active presence
  • Although Jesus is no longer on earth, his is still active and sharing God’s love with people
  • Jesus helped to bring God’s love and presence into the world - making the world sacramental.
