Tripartite Knowledge Flashcards

1
Q

Ability, Aquaintance and Propositional knowledge

A

Ability knowledge is knowing how to do soemthing. Aquaontance knowledge is knowimg of someone/soemthing via experience. Propoditional knowledge is knowing that a statement is true or false.

Q

4 thungs to avoid in a definition

A

Adhoc - trying to solve a single problem. Negative - saying what soemthing isnt. Circular - using the word you are defining in the definition. Obscure - more complicated that the definition itself.

The Tripartite View

A

- P is true
- S believes P
-S is justified in believing P

Q

Coherence theory of truth/ correspondence theory of truth

A
  • coherance theory: soemthing is true if it fits with our current understanding.
  • correspondance theory: soemthing is true if it corresponds with reality

Q

Issue including:
The conditions are not individually neccesary: truth component

A

It is hard to see how truth isnt neccesary in knowledge. If you believe the coherence theory of truth it is possible that some things we count as knowledge are now shown to be false in the future. Cavewoman/flat earth example.

Q

Issues including:
The conditions are not individually neccessary: Belief components

A

Plato says knowledge is certain, while belief is wesker, so by definition knowledge cant be belief. This is different to how we use knowledge in everyday life, we claim to know many things qe dont have 100% certainty in. Albert game show example

Q

Issues including:
The conditions are not individually neccessary: Justification

A

A flash of insight would count as knowledge if it were an expert. If it is not possible for someone to beleive something without justification, the justificatiom condition is pointless. We hold many beliefs that, if intensly questioned, we’d run out if justification for. This rules out lucky guesses.

Q

Issue:
The conditions are not sufficient

A

Smith/ Jones job interview - His belief doesnt count as knowledge as it was only luckily true.
Jones owns a ford - He was luckily true about Browns location.
In both cases JTB is.not.sufficient as luck was involved.

Q

Response including:
Ruling out Gettier cases

A

-P is true
- S believes P
- S is justified in beleiving P
- P is jot a Gettier case.
The issue with this is that it falls into the obscure and adhoc catergory, ehich we shoukd avoid in definitions

Q

Repsonse including:
Infalliblism

A

Something counts as knowledge iff it is a true belief that is.impossible to doubt. This rules out Gettier cases as the beliefs are infallible. But it rules out most things we consider to be knowledge, it doesnt seem to.fit the way we generally use the word knowledge

Q

Response including:
No false lemmas

A

A lemma is a belief that is accpted as yrue in an argument. We can sti peoduce examples where luck contributed to a true belief, without false lemmas (Fake barn county). So JTB + no false lemmas is not sufficient.

Q

Response including:
Reliabilism

A

A reliable process is one which produces a greater amount of true beliefs. It is more inclusive (animals/babies). Justification is an internal orocesss, you jeed evidence, but a reluable process is external and needs no evidence

Q

Response:
Epistemic virtue

A

3 components:
1) motivation
2) act virtuously to find info
3) you gain a true belief because of these.
The issue is that these are too broard(conspiricy theories) and too narrow (animals/babies)
It rules out luck tho
