triparte view Flashcards
Give Plato’s example of of the difference between someone having true belief and then knowledge
travelling into town with a tour guide who knows the way, in this case the tour guide would be good. Travelling with a tour guide who guessed the way correctly, she would then too be a tour guide. In both cases you end up in the right town . Why should we prefer knowledge over belief
Why does Plato argue we value knowledge more than true belief?
we can hold true beliefs that we would be reluctant to call knowledge due to the nature of evidence supporting them
What was Plato’s tripartite theory known as?
JTB- Justified, True, Belief
necessary condition
something you need in order to have that thing in question `
example of a necessary condition
water is a necessary condition of rain
sufficient condition
when met mean you will always have the thing in question
give an example of a sufficient condition
being an aunt is a sufficient condition for having relatives- not necessary as a person can have relatives without being an aunt
explain an example where the conditions can be necessary and sufficient
Bachelor example- having never been married and being a man are necessary and sufficient conditions for being a bachelor
you cant be a bachelor without these conditions
explain JTB in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions
justification, truth and belief are individually necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for knowledge according to Plato
