Triglycerides Flashcards
1
Q
What are Triacylglycerols?
A
Trigcyglycerols are lipids used for energy storage and each molecule consists of three fatty acid molecules covalently bonded to a glycerol molecule
2
Q
How are monoglycerides formed?
A
If one glycerol reacts with one fatty acid, a monoglyceride is formed
3
Q
Triglyceride
A
When one glycerol reacts with three fatty acids, a triglyceride is formed
4
Q
Note!
A
1)Fatty acids connected to the glycerol backbone may be saturated or unsaturated
2)If there is a double bond, the fatty acid will kink in the final glyceride molecule
5
Q
Unsaturated fatty acids
A
May have one or more double bonds
