Non-essential vs. Essential FA Flashcards
Non-essential fatty acids
1)Most fatty acids are considered as non-essential fatty acids
2)Non-essential fatty acids means that the body can synthesize them when needed
Essential fatty acids
1)Essential fatty acids cannot be synthesized in the body, but are required for the normal functioning of the body
2)Therefore they have to be supplied in the diet as fats
Sources of Essential Fatty Acids
Essential Fatty Acids can be found in fish, shellfish, canola oil, sunflower seed and leafy vegetables
Fishes Swimming Candily, Surrounding Lizards
Types of Essential Fatty Acids
1)Linoleic (omega-6 fatty acids)
2)Linolenic (omega-3 fatty acids)
-Both are found in plant and fish oils
Functions of Essential Fatty Acids
These EFAs are used by our bodies to make:
1)certain hormones, vitamins
2)prostaglandins (hormone-like substance used to regulate e.g. blood pressure, blood clotting)
