Trigeminal Proprioception Flashcards
1
Q
What’s propriception?
A
Awareness of position of body parts in relation to each other and surroundings
2
Q
What’s kinaesthesia?
A
movement awareness
3
Q
What are the trigeminal proprioceptors?
A
- Muscles of mastication (muscle spindles)
- Periodontal ligament mechanoreceptors (PDLMs)
- TMJ receptors
4
Q
What are intrafusal muscle fibres?
A
Muscle spindles/specialised muscle fibres within a CT capsule
- Surrounded by the bulk of muscle contractile muscle fibres
5
Q
What are the afferent fibres bound to muscle spindle contractile and non-contractile areas?
A
- Ia/primary afferent fibre nerve endings are bound to the non-contractile/stretchy portion in the centre = detects length of fibres and speed of change in length
- II/secondary fibre nerve endings which detects length of fibres
6
Q
What is the efferent nerve fibre attached to the contractile portion of muscle spindle fibres?
A
- Gamma efferent fibres = motor neuron
- Cause contraction of intrafusal fibres
- Maintain tension in spindle and spindle afferent activity
7
Q
Outline spindle action
A
- Holding glass and fill
- Bicep spindle stretch
- Increases motor neuron drive to bicep
- Muscle length maintained to resist the downward force
8
Q
What are other Propriceptors?
A
- Golgi Tendon Organs
- In tendon
