Jaw Reflexes Flashcards
1
Q
What is a reflex and what is a reflex arch?
A
- Predictable response to a given stimulus
- Receptor (PNS)
- Afferent Neuron (PNS)
- Synapse(s) (CNS)
- Efferent Neuron (PNS)
- Effector (PNS)
2
Q
What’s conduction time?
A
Neuron speed and distance
3
Q
What are the 2 types of jaw reflexes?
A
- Vertical
- move mandible relative to maxilla in vertical plane - Horizontal
- move mandible relative to maxilla in protrusive, retrusive or lateral direction
4
Q
What’s the role of the jaw-jerk?
A
Phasic role:
- load compensation during chewing
- Stabilises jaw during vigorous head movements (during running)
Tonic role:
- Resist gravity
- Helps maintain posture
5
Q
How are teeth positioned at rest?
A
Apart
- Maintained by minimal muscle activity or governed by muscle elasticity
6
Q
Why is the rest position important when creating dentures?
A
- Important reference position/height with F/F dentures (full upper + lower dentures)
7
Q
What’s the role of inhibitory jaw reflexes?
A
- Protection
- restrain build-up of forces between teeth during mastication = prevents overloading periodontium/masticatory muscles/TMJ
