- LI - cecum, colon
- Whipworm
2
Q
What is the life cycle for Trichuris suis?
A
- Direct
- L1 infective, and in egg
- PPP 6-12 weeks
- Adults in cecum release eggs
- Larva mature in egg in environment to L1
- L1 in egg ingested, and L1 released
- L1 penetrates LI mucosa and develops to adult
- Egg must stay in environment for 1-2 months for L1 do mature before infective
- Anterior ends of adults embedded in LI mucosa

Q
What are some general features of epidemiology and clinical signs of Trichuris suis?
A
- Mild to moderate infections
- Transmission mainly seen in outdoor systems (or indoor systems if using solid floors)
- Eggs survive in the environment for years!
- Clinical signs - reduced growth rate. May see loose feces to diarrhea, and +/- blood in heavy infection

Q
How is diagnosis of Trichuris suis made?
Why are eggs seen only in animals 10 weeks or older?
A
- FEC - typical whip egg (bipolar plugs)
- Since PPP is 6-10 weeks, eggs mainly seen in pigs older than 10 weeks.
- A negative FEC therefore, does not rule-out infection
