What are some general characteristics of Hyostrongylus rubidus?
A
- Typical trichostrongylid LC
- Direct, L3 is infective, EL4 possible, PPP ~21 days
- Chronic gastritis
- outdoor pigs only
- Nodules in gastric mucosa (similar to Ostertagia)

Is Hyostrongylus a disease of young, old pigs, or both?
A
- Both?
- Predominently a dz of pigs with access to pasture or those kept in straw yards.
- More common in breeding stock, particularly gilts (young females - before or after 1 litter) and lactating sows.

What are the clinical signs of Hyostrongylus rubidus?
How is diagnosis made?
A
- Path is similar to Ostertagiosis - replacement/loss of parietal cells, increased pH, sometimes ulceration and hemorrhage
- inappetence
- anemia
- loss of condition
- reduced fertility
- dx by FEC
