  • Typical trichostrongylid LC
  • Direct, L3 is infective, EL4 possible, PPP ~21 days
  • Chronic gastritis
  • outdoor pigs only
  • Nodules in gastric mucosa (similar to Ostertagia)

Is Hyostrongylus a disease of young, old pigs, or both?

  • Both?
  • Predominently a dz of pigs with access to pasture or those kept in straw yards.
  • More common in breeding stock, particularly gilts (young females - before or after 1 litter) and lactating sows.

  • Path is similar to Ostertagiosis - replacement/loss of parietal cells, increased pH, sometimes ulceration and hemorrhage
  • inappetence
  • anemia
  • loss of condition
  • reduced fertility
  • dx by FEC
