Bench trial
A trial before a judge without a jury
Peremptory challenge
One of a party’s limited number of challenges that do not need to be supported by a reason unless the opposing party makes a prima facie showing that the challenge was used to discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, or sex

The questioning of a witness at a trial by the party opposed to the party who called the witness to testify The purpose of this is to discredit a witness

In court contradiction of an adverse party’s evidence

Acquittal
The legal certification by jury verdict that an accused person is not guilty of the charged offense
Hung jury
A jury that cannot reach a verdict by the required voting margin
Mistrial
A trial that ends inconclusively because the jury cannot agree on a verdict
