Arraignment
Preliminary hearing, a proceeding in which the accused is brought before the court to plead to the criminal charge in the indictment or information
Plea
In a criminal proceeding, it’s the defendant’s declaration in open court that he or she is guilty or not guilty
Allocation
A defendant’s statement in mitigating of punishment
Mitigation
The act of making a condition or consequence less severe
Mitigation of punishment
The reduction in the severity of a sentence due to the existence of mitigation circumstances. Mitigation circumstances reduce the degree of moral culpability
Culpability
Guilt or blame that is deserved
Disposition
A final settlement or determination. The court decision terminating proceeding in a case before judgement is reached, or the final judgment
Complainant
Plaintiff, the part who complains or sues
Preliminary
Preceding and leading up to the main part, introductory.
Indictment
A formal accusation initiating a criminal case, presented by a grand jury and usually required for felonies and other serious crimes
Extenuating
The act of making the commission of a crime or tort less severe
