Trends In The Periotic Table Flashcards
Why is group one elements highly reactive?
But group 18 is not?
Group one elements have one valence electron they prefer to have a full valence shell so they are willing be highly reactive in order to get rid of the one valence electron.
However group 18 has full outer shell meaning it is very stable and doesn’t need to react with other atoms
Group one is called what?
Alkali metals
What is the atomic radius?
The size of the atom
Distance from the centre of the nucleus to the outer shell
In group one and two
As the atomic radius increases down the group..
The attraction between what grows weaker?
Between positive nucleus+
And negative electrons-
What is the most reactive element in group one and why?
Caesium Cs because the atomic radius is the larger making the valence electron more easily lost to other atoms in a reaction
What is the atomic radius?
The distance from the centre of the nucleus to the outer shell
Explain why caesium is the most reactive in group one?
The trend in the alkali metals is the reactivity increases down the group
As caesium placed at the very bottom of the group the atomic radius is the largest.
As the distance between the nucleus and valence electron increases, the attraction becomes weaker, causing the one valence electron to be easily lost In a chemical reaction. Causing caesium to be extremely reactive
What is the alkili metal and alkili earth metal trend?
Reactivity increases down the table due to the enlargement of the atomic radius
Why is group one elements highly reactive?
Because there is only valence electron.
This makes them really want to have a full valence shell since they only need to lose one more electron to achieve a full valence shell.
Causing the elements to be highly reactive.
Why is Sodium in group one more reactive than Magnesium in group two
Because sodium only needs to lose one valence electron in order to obtain a full valence shell
Compared to Magnesium which needs to lose two electrons
It is easier for one electron to be lost than two
As well sodium has a slightly larger atomic radius this means their is a greater distance between the positively charged nucleus and the valence electron.
Making the attraction between the nucleus and valence electron weaker
Causing the valence electron to be easily lost in a reaction.
What 17 is called what?
Halogens
Group 17 reactivity increases upwards or down wards?
Upwards
Why is group 17 more reactive the smaller the shells it has?
Since the positively charged nucleus is closer to the valence electron the attraction is stronger making it easier to gain an electron
Why is group 17 and 1 most reactive groups?
This is due to the one valence electron it has to gain in the case of group 17 or lose in the case of group 1
The group prefers to have a full valence shell to be stable so they want to lose or gain in order to obtain a full valence shell
Large atomic radius makes to easier to..
Lose electrons
