Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is an ionic bond?
chemical reactions
Atoms form a bond by a transfer of valence electrons between two oppositely charged metal and non metal
Why does ionic bonding happen?
This happens because the two unstable atoms want to form a full valence shell
Which one transfers the electrons
Metal or non metal?
Metal
Metal has a positive charge.
What is this called?
Cation
Non metal has a negative charge.
What is this called
Anion
Does metal lose or gain an electron?
Lose
Does non metal lose or gain an electron?
Gain
Work out the ionic bond formula of..
Metal Sodium (Na) 1+ charge
Non metal chloride (Cl) with a 1- charge
NaCl Sodium Chloride
Why in sodiumchloride NaCl is it not Na1Cl1
Because the charges balance each other out this is a one to one ratio
To form an ionic compound..
How many electrons does magnesium
Mg 2+
have to transfer to Oxygen O 2-
And why?
2 electrons
Because the 2+ charge means Mg has to get rid of two electrons in order to have a full valence shell..
Vice versa O 2- needs 2 electrons to obtain a full valence shell.
Is Mg 2+ an anion or cation?
Cation is always positive charge
Is O 2-
An anion or cation?
Anion always negative charge
Why is the ionic compound magnesium Oxide MgO not Mg2O2
Because the 2+ in Mg
and 2- in O
balances each other out in a 1:1 ratio
What is metal and non metals charge?
Metal is a cation (positive charge)
Non metal is a anion (negative charge)
What determines charge of an atom?
How many electrons to need to lose or gain to obtain a full valence shell
