Trench Warfare Flashcards
Trench Conditions (Rats, Lice, Death, Snipers, Trench Foot, etc.)
Rats the size of cats in the trenches,
lice crawling on your skin,
dead soldiers all around you,
snipers were capable of shooting a man 100ft away and if not careful and decided to peak over trench risk of being seen and shot by a sniper
If your foot was exposed to wet and damp temperatures. It causes skin and tissue to break down which can lead to infection.
Weapons (Tanks, Artillery, Airplanes, Machine Guns, etc.)
In WWI tank were slow and ineffective getting stuck in mud and craters
Artillery was used to send large exploding projectiles across long distances which could explode at anytime
Airplanes who flyover enemy trench networks for intelligence purposes
But later on they added machine guns to them which were used in dog fights
During WWI machine guns were capable of shooting 500 bullets per minute.
Trench Networks
Trenches were built in zig zig patterns so if a grenade or artillery shell were to fall in one section it wouldn’t hurt anyone in the other section
No Man’s Land
It is the space between the trenches in order to attack your enemy you have to cross it exposed, filled with barbed wire, mud, land mines, and dead soldiers
Shell Shock
Artillery and machine gun fire was ceaseless so every man at the front was kept awake; many were unable to keep their composure or even sanity because of the constant bombardment.
Desertion
Any man who tried to escape the horrors of war ran the risk of being captured and killed.
Stalemate
Neither side can make progress
