No mans land
The stretch of land between the 2 opposing front-line trenches

To minimize the effect of shell fire and to prevent the enemy firing down the length of the trench

Many men were buried from large shell bursts. Sniper bullets killed men on their first day. Disease killed many.

Rats, lice, trench foot, fevers, flooding, disease

Bread, bully beef, hard biscuits

Carried in empty gas cans, tasted of gasoline. Sometimes water form muddy holes was only available
