Trematode Overview Flashcards
What is the general morphology of the Trematode?
Unsegmented flattened size and shape variations
What are two shape variations of Trematodes?
Leaf- like and Worm-like
What are the two types of Trematodes?
Monogenetic and Digenetic
Define Monogentic
Single host for entire lifecycle (fish amphibians and reptiles)
Define Digenetic
Two to four Obligate hosts, potential Paratenic hosts (animals and humans)
What is a Paratenic host?
Transport the parasite from the Intermediate host to the Definitive host by ingestion
Trematodes are Hermaphroditic except for which type?
Blood flukes (Schistosomes)
Parts of the Trematode GI tract
Oral sucker, Pharynx, Esophagus, and Blind Seca
How does the Trematode expel waste
Regurgitation bc it has no anus
How does the Trematode attach to the host?
Ventral sucker called the Acetabulum
In the Cercariae stage of the Digenetic lifecycle what are the three options of entering the Definitive host?
- Skin penetration
- Encyst on vegetation and wait to be eaten
- Penetrate a second intermediate host that will be eaten by the Definitive host
During the Digenetic lifecycle, what organism emerges from the egg
Miracidia
What is the Indirect lifecycle?
development within the intermediate host
What is the most common egg type of the Trematode
Operculated (trap door)
What are the Predilection sites of Trematodes within the Definitive host
Rumen/ reticulum, intestines, Liver, Bile Duct, Lungs, and Blood Vessels
