What is the function of roots?
Hold plant in place
Soak up water and nutrients from the soil
How do scientists determine a tree’s age?
They count annual (yearly) rings.
What do narrow rings mean?
Limited space, short growing season, drought, or cool climate
What do wide rings mean?
Long growing season, rain, sun, space
What does it mean to have a narrow rings on one side and wide on the other?
Means there were poor growing conditions
What scarred rings mean?
Fire damage or insects
What is photosynthesis?
Plant making its own food using energy from the sun, water from the soil, and carbon dioxide from the air.
What is the function of Chlorophyll?
It helps in photosynthesis (food production)
Give leaves green color
What do plants and animals need to live?
Food, sunlight, air, water
Life of a tree?
Spring – new buds appear
summer – grow to full size
fall – leaves change color and fall off
winter – dormant (sleeping)
