Trees Flashcards
How is maple extracted?
In early spring, as soon it stops freezing and the nutrients are pulled from the roots, they tap into the trunks to allow the sap to flow out.
They then boil the sap to evaporate the water
What is a dendrometer?
An instrument to measure the growth and diameter of trees
Describe sap flux in maple trees
The sap flow is driven by the freeze-thaw cycle; warmer temperatures cause the sap and other nutrients to come up from the roots, and the freezing temperatures at night send the nutrients back to the roots through pressure forces. When the hole is drilled, as the sap flows up and down the xylem, it exits into the tubing and into the buckets.
What is an Emerald Ash Borer? EAB How do they kill trees?
Invasive green beetle.
- Lay eggs in the bark crevices of ash trees. The larvae feed on the inner bark and phloem, which disrupts the water and nutrient transport of the tree, killing it.
What is Dutch elm disease?
A fungal pathogen carried by elm bark beetles. The beetles lay their eggs in the bark of weakened or drying elm trees.
- As the larvae develop, they create galleries under the bark, which become infected with the fungal spores.
- When they become adults, they emerge, fly onto healthy trees and feed on their bark, introducing the spores to the new host
Where did Dutch elm disease originate, and where has it spread to?
Originated in Ohio and is now in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and southeast AB
How many kilometres of non-native trees have been planted in SK through shelterbelt programs?
63,000 kms
How much carbon is in a tree?
Half of a tree is made up of carbon
- Since half of the tree is above and half is below ground, we can picture the above portion as being all carbon
