Q

Discuss the Burning of The Boyd.

A
  1. A ship visited Whangaorao. Captain had dropped his watch in sea, Maori considered this a bad omen. Also, ship left without a proper ceremony & crew spread influenza (which killed lots of local Maori).
The Boyd visited Whangaorao again in 1809, wanting to trade. The Captain & crew were lured inland & were killed & eaten. Some people were spared & kept prisoner. Another Maori chief tried to save some but failed. The ship blew up accidentally.
NZ got a bad reputation so there was less to trade. A ship came & rescued the survivors & the 2 men who did the massacre were captured & sold as slaves.
