TREATMENTS OF DEPRESSION Flashcards
1
Q
becks
A
- Beck’s cognitive therapy is based on his negative triad; the therapist identifies the patient’s automatic
irrational thoughts about the world, the self and the future.
2
Q
2nd step (beck)
A
- The therapist guides clients to question and challenge their dysfunctional thoughts
- try out new interpretations, and ultimately apply alternative ways of thinking in their daily lives.
3
Q
3rd step (beck)
A
- The therapist also helps the patient realise their negative thinking is false by testing the reality of their negative beliefs.
4
Q
ELLIS REBT
A
- Ellis’ REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy) is extended from the ABC model to the ABCDE model.
5
Q
Ellis rational emotive behaviour REBKT
A
- D for dispuite
- E for effect
6
Q
challening irrational thoughts
A
- client may talk about how unfair and worthless their life is a REBT therapist will idenity this utopianism and challenge it as irrational.
7
Q
empirical argument
A
- the therapist asks if there is evidence to support the belief.
8
Q
Vigorous argument
A
- they challenge irrational beliefs to break the link between negative life events and depression.
- Vigorous argument is the key component of REBT
9
Q
evidence for effectiveness
A
- Str of CBT is that there is supporting research. For example, March et al studied 327 depressed
adolescents and found 81% of patients undergoing CBT had significantly improved symptoms. - This shows CBT can reduce symptoms of depression and is an appropriate treatment.
- This is an advantage as it increases the quality of life for patients
10
Q
a limitation is the suitability for diverse clients :(
A
- in servere cases client may not be able to motivate themselves to engage with the CBT work they may not pay attention in sessions
- sturmey suggests that any form of psychotherapy (including CBT) is not suitable for ppl with learning disabilitites
- CBT is only appropiate in a range of clients
11
Q
Counterpoint of diverse clients
A
- lewis and lewis concluded that CBT was an effective as other treatments for severe depression.
- taylor et al concluded that CBT can be effective for ppl with learning disabilities
- CBT may have more wide applications that thought
12
Q
high relapse rate
A
- few studies looked at long-term effectiveness and recent studies suggests relapse is common.
- ali et al assesed depression for 12 months following a course of CBT 42% relapsed within 6 months of ending treatment and 53% within a year.
- this means CBT needs to be repeated periodaclly
13
Q
One limitation of CBT is that it only focuses on cognitive factors.
A
- For example, CBT ignores other - factors such as a person’s environment.
- This means it disregards the importance of a person’s circumstances.
- A person suffering abuse needs to change their circumstances, not just their thought processes.
- This is a disadvantage as it may inappropriately discourage people from changing their situation, and only focus on changing their thought processes.
- Thus, the problem isn’t going to get solved this way
