Treatments For Sz - CBT Flashcards
What are the three AO3 peels to evaluate CBT?
RTS - effectiveness of CBT
Weakness - requires motivation and commitment
Strength - avoids chemical dependence
P
(RTS - effectiveness of CBT)
RTS - effectiveness of CBT was carried out by a psychologist
E
- they reviewed the results of CBT studies as a treatment for sz
- they concluded CBT has a small effect on both pos and neg symptoms of sz
E
- showing CBT is effective in treating sz as by challenging irrational thoughts, it can reduce symptoms of sz
L
Therefore increasing the validity of CBT as a treatment for sz
Counter Argument
However CBT only had a small impact suggesting CBT as a sole treatment may not be appropriate, so a combo of drugs and CBT may be more effective
P
(Weakness - requires motivation)
Weakness - CBT - requires motivation
E
- this is because patients have to attend sessions every week and complete hwk to challenge symptoms like delusions
- this may be difficult for sz patients with neg symptoms such as avolition as they lack the motivation to engage
E
- this means CBT may only be effective if combined with drug treatment
- as symptoms may be reduced such as delusions, increasing motivation
L
Therefore the use of CBT alone may not be appropiate as some indv may stop attending sessions, leading to relapse of symptoms
P
(Strength - avoids chemical dependence)
Strength - avoids chemical dependence
E
- this is because CBT encourages indv to identify and challenge their irrational thoughts independently
- giving them control over own bhv
E
- unlike drug therapy which uses drugs to reduce the levels of dopamine in the brain which can reduce symptoms
- but only while person is taking drugs, meaning less control over symptoms from indv and more dependence from drugs
(Without drugs, treatment is ineffective for a long term period)
L
Therefore some indv may prefer CBT as a more appropiate treatment for sz
