Q
Polidocanol is used for what?
A
Polidocanol is used typically for varicose veins
- Used for tendinosis and tenosynovitis
- it is believed that in an attempt to heal the body of tendinosis, new blood vessels and nerves grow into a diseased tendon, producing pain
- Targeting the new vessels with polidocanol can bring pain relief
1
Q
Describe ESWT - Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy
A
- involves the conversion of a sound wave into a shock that is delivered repeatedly to a specific part of the body
- similar to lithotripsy used for renal calculus
- become popular in recent years to treat for musculoskeletal conditions including tennis elbow, Achilles Tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis and tendinitis of the shoulder
- The most accepted theory of how ESWT works is that microtrauma caused by repeated shock waves increases blood flow to the area and this promotes healing
2
Q
ABI - Autologous Blood Injections
A
- Commonly for tendinosis
- Blood contains nutrients and substances thought to promote healing
- Platelets contain many powerful growth factors, in particular PDGF ( platelet derived growth factor) which has been shown to promote healing of many types of tissues including tendons which are damaged due to excessive use and/ or the ageing process
3
Q
PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma Injection
A
Larger amounts of blood are taken then for ABI, the blood is centrifuged down
- the platelet rich plasma is preferentially removed and injected into the affected site.
- platelets have been shown to contain many powerful growth factors, in particular PDGF ( platelet derived growth factor) which has been shown to promote healing of many types of tissue including tendons
4
Q
Cortisone
A
- group of drugs termed corticosteroids
- powerful anti inflammatories
- Used to relive symptoms of bursitis, arthritis, nerve pain, adhesive capsulitis , Mortons neuroma.
5
Q
ATI -Autologous Tenocyte Implantation
A
ATI - Autologous Tenocyte Implantation
- Regenerative procedure where patients healthy cells are harvested and grown in a laboratory and then injected back into a diseased painful tendon
- produces collagen and healthy tissue strengthening the injected tendon, improving function and reducing pain
