Eye Flashcards
Trauma
Rupture or dislocation of lens
Gas in anterior chamber
Cataracts
Echoes in the normally anechoic lens
Thickened echogenic posterior lens wall
Vitreous posterior detachment
Posterior vitreous capsule detaches from the underlying retina
The detached echogenic vitreous swirls away from the optic nerve during dynamic scanning
Vitreous haemorrhage
Result of trauma
Fresh haemorrhage may not be visible or seen as a relatively homogenous increase in echogenicity stranding and scarring or a fluid-fluid level within the orbit
Retrohyaloid haemorrhage
Haemorrhage behind vitreous displaces vitreous gel and capsule forward
With dynamic scanning, the homogenously echogenic blood swirls to and fro but is confined between the retina and the capsule
Retinal detachment
Can be partial or total
Retina remains attached at the optic nerve head and near the ciliary bodies
Membranous opacity may be mobile or fixed during dynamic scanning
Choroid detachment
Choroid balloons into vitreous in a biconvex manner and can be seen in all planes of imaging
Differentiated from retinal detachment by its posterior wall attachment some distance away from the optic nerve
Malignant Melanoma
Rounded heterogenous mass
Do not move with dynamic scanning
U/S to assess AP measurement and location in relation to optic nerve head
Often causes retinal detachment
Retinoblastoma
Most common primary intel ocular malignancy of childhood
Mass within the orbit containing calcification
May be bilateral
May be associated with retinal detachment
