treatments Flashcards
what did novaco suggest
some offenders more likely to see a situation as threatening and stressful leading them to react violently
why is cbt useful
identify and restructure faulty patterns to impact behaviour so turn neg thoughts into pos ones
stage 1 cognitive prep
reflection on situations that have triggered anger in the past and consider diff reactions and redfine situation as non threatening by rationalising
stage 2 skill acquisition
eg progressive muscle relaxation and dev strategies to ensure offender learns diff behaviour so control ones emotions rather being controlled by them
stage 3 application practice
demo and practice skills and evaluate their own responses and which techniques they found worked for them

strengths of anger management
based on psychological principles eg cbt- scientific cred and research based
follows standardised procedures making it reliable and useful and they reduce
provide criminals insight into their criminal behaviour and easily incp into their life making it ethical
weakness of anger management
reductionsit- foucses on thought processes but not addressing underlying causes
blackburn anger management help offenders control behaviour shorterm but longterm reoffending rates unaffected
effectiveness may be limited as anger management isnt linked directly to violent crimes
loza and loza fanous only suitable for offenders where lack of emotional control contributed to their crime
social control- form new way of thinking and therapist to decide what needs to be changed
describe one bio treatment
MPA decreases the functioning of testosterone - an anti-androgen which breaks down and eliminates testosterone by inhibiting production reducing overall in sexual drive and deviant sexual fantasy
however there are side ffects eg breast englargemnt and decreeased sperm production
maletzky evidence for MPA
retrospective review looked back ovr history of 275 inmates 141 not suitable for MPA and 79 suitable and got and others suitbale but not got it and found MPA commited fewer new offences and NO sexual offences
strength of MPA
supported by research other studies eg Turner et al found hormone treatment to be effective
beenficial for society since recidivism rates reduced demo psych knowledge in society
limitations of MPA
paraole officers filled in questionnaires so biased no inter-rater relaibility
retrospective study biased looks for data in past and innacurate
ethical issues since MPA can cause side effects no protection from harm
to ensure they take the drug msut be retrained impacts their free willrestricts their sexual freedom
reductionist ignores social and cog impact
