Treatment Programs Flashcards
Detoxification and Medically Managed Withdrawal
Detox is when the body clears itself of drugs and is often accompanied by unpleasant and sometimes fatal side effects.
Outpatient Treatment Programs
Costs less that residential treatment and is often more suitable for people with jobs or extensive social supports.
Short-term Residential Treatment
Provide intensive but relatively brief treatment based on a modified 12-step approach.
Long-term Residential Treatment
Therapeutic community, provides 24-hour a day care with planned lengths of stay between 6 and 12 months.
Focuses on resocialization.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Central element of this is anticipating likely problems and helping patients develop effective coping strategies.
Contingency Management Interventions/Motivational Incentives
Based on operant conditioning principles of reinforcing drug-free urine samples with low-cost incentives.
Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)
Seems to be more effective for engaging drug abusers in treatment than for producing changes in drug use.
12-Step Facilitation Therapy
One of the goals is to increase the likelihood of drug-abstinence through affiliation and active engagement in a social community.
Behavioural Couples Therapy (BCT)
Uses a sobriety contract and behavioural principles to reinforce abstinence from drugs.
Behavioural Treatments for Adolescents
MDFT- Multidimensional Family Therapy
BSFT- Brief Strategic Family Therapy
MST- Multisystemic Therapy
Reducing Withdrawal
Pharmacotherapies that help alleviate the discomfort of withdrawal are a good first step, but they aren’t sufficient.
Reducing Drug Reward, Craving, and Relapse
May be administered long-term to reduce the rewarding effects of drugs of abuse and prevent relapse.
The Future of Pharmacotherapy
Currently, vaccines are being developed and tested for the treatment of cocaine, nicotine, PCP, methamphetamine, heroine, and morphine addiction.
