What is clinical psychology?
The field of practice and research that is directed towards helping people who suffer from psychological problems and disorders.
What is involved in assertive community treatment?
Each person with a disorder is assigned to a multidisciplinary team, which typically includes a case manager, psychiatrist, general physician, nurse and social workers. Someone is available 24/7 in case of emergency. These can be highly effective in reducing the need for hospitalization.
What are the major categories of mental health providers?
Psychiatrists; medical school training, special training, residency, only ones who can prescribe drugs.
Clinical psychologists; Doctorates in psychology, training in research and practice.
Counseling psychologists; doctorates in counselling, less emphasis on research more on practice, more for people who do not warrant a diagnosis.
Mental health counselors; masters degree, less training, schools etc, may also conduct psychotherapy in private practice.
Psychiatric social workers; masters degree in social work, advanced training, experience with people with psychological problems
Psychiatric nurses; degrees in nursing, advanced training in care of patients with mental illness.
