What is the treatment for steroid and alcohol-related hepatitis?

A
  • Offer corticosteroid treatment
  • Only after treating any active infection, GI bleeding or renal impairment
  • Shown to improve survival short-term (1 month)

What is the treatment of neonatal jaundice?

A
  • Fluid and caloric intake will prevent worsening
  • Unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia may be treated with phototherapy or exchange transfusion
  • Conjugated hyperbilirubinaemia due to obstruction - treat underlying condition

What is the management for primary biliary cholangitis?

A
  • first-line: ursodeoxycholic acid
    slows disease progression and improves symptoms
  • pruritus: cholestyramine
  • fat-soluble vitamin supplementation
  • liver transplantation
    e.g. if bilirubin > 100 (PBC is a major indication)
    recurrence in graft can occur but is not usually a problem
