Q

How does Beck’s cognitive behaviour therapy work?

A

-identify Becks negative triad

-patient and therapist then work together to challenge these negative thoughts, by discussing evidence for and against them-thought catching

Q

How does Ellis’s rational emotive therapy work?

A

-Ellis developed his model to include D and E-dispute and effective. like Beck the main idea is to challenge negative thoughts; however ellis does this though dispute.

-the therapist will dispute the patient’s irrational beliefs, to replace their irrational beliefs with more effective beliefs and attitudes

-there are different types of dispute with can be used, including: logical dispute-where the therapist disputes the logic of a persons thoughts or empirical dispute-where the therapist seeks evidence for a persons thoughts

Q

What is a limitation of CBT?

A

P-a limitation of CBT its high relapse rates

E-Early studies looked at long-term effectiveness and recent studies suggest that relapse is common. For example, Ali et al assessed that depression in 439 clients every month for 12 months following a course of CBT. 42% of the clients relapsed into depression within 6 months of ending treatment and 53% relapsed within a year.

C-This means that CBT needs to be repeated to truly be effective.

Q

What is a strength of CBT?

A

p-a strength of CBT is the amount of supporting evidence for it’s effectiveness,

E-For example, March et al compared the effective the effects of CBT with antidepressant drugs and a combination of the two in 327. After 36 weeks 81% of CBT group and 86% of the CBT+antidepressants group were significantly improved. So CBT was as effective when used on its own and even more so when combined with antidepressant drugs.

C-This means there is a good case for making CBT the first choice of treatment in public health care systems like NHS

Q

What is a limitation of CBT?

A

P-A limitation of CBT is suitability for a diverse range of clients.

E-In severe cases depressed clients may not be able to motive themselves ti engage with the cognitive work of CBT. They may not even be able to pay attention in a session. Sturmy suggests that any form of psychotherapy is not suitable for people with learning difficulties.

C-This suggests that CBT may only be appropriate for a specific range of depressed people

CA-There is now evidence to challenge this notion. For example, Lewis and Lewis concluded that CBT was as effective as other treatments for serve depression. Taylor et al concluded that CBT can be effective for people with learning disabilities. This means that CBT may have a much wider application than was previously thought.
