Travis’s Illness-Wellness Continuum Flashcards
Travis’s Illness-Wellness Continuum
(Travis and Ryan, 2001)
• The model illustrates two arrows pointing in opposite directions and joined at a neutral point.
• Movement to the right of the neutral point indicates increasing levels of health and well-being for an individual, this is achieved in three steps; (a) awareness, (b) education, and (c) growth
Illness-Wellness Continuum
• In contrast, movement to the left of the neutral point
indicates progressively decreasing levels of health.
• It is believed that its possible to be physically ill and at the same time oriented to ward wellness, or be physically healthy and at the same time function from an illness mentally.
Illness-Wellness Continuum
Left side: (Pre-Mature Death)
- Disability
-Symptoms
-Signs
Right side: (Hugh-Level Wellness)
- Awareness
- Education
- Growth
• For example, a man with hypertension who takes
antihypertensive medication to reduce blood pressure
and reduce blood pressure and relieve any associated
symptoms moves to the neutral point.
• However, wellness-oriented measures such as reducing
weight or ceasing to smoke are needed to move person
beyond the neutral point to a higher point of wellness
✓ Rosenstoch and Becker and Maiman proposed the Health Belief Model.
✓ This model addresses the relationship between a person’s beliefs and behaviors.
✓ The Health Belief Model helps to understand the factors influencing patients’ perceptions, beliefs, and
behavior to plan the care.
Health belief model
✓ It has got three components:
1. Individual’s perception of susceptibility to an illness
2. Individual’s perception of the seriousness of the illness
3. Likelihood of taking preventive action
